About the Collectible Coins
The 56 quarter-dollar coins feature designs depicting national parks and other national sites from all 50 states, the District of Columbia and U.S. Territories. This multiyear program will run from 2010 to 2021.
The designs will be displayed on the reverse (tails) of the quarters, while the obverse (heads) will continue to bear the familiar "restored" 1932 John Flanagan image of George Washington.
The designs were developed in accordance with the established design criteria and through a consultative process involving the governor or chief executive of each host jurisdiction, the U.S. Department of the Interior, and the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts. They were then selected after review by the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee. The Department of the Treasury approved all final designs.
Site Selection
The America's Beautiful Quarter Dollar Coin Act of 2008 provides for designs to be submitted in accordance with the design selection and approval process developed by, and in sole discretion of, the Secretary of the Treasury.
The Department of the Treasury approved the list of sites to be honored after consulting with the governor or chief executive of each host jurisdiction and Secretary of the Interior Kenneth Salazar, in accordance with authorizing legislation and the site selection process.
The designs on the coins issued during this program shall be emblematic of one national site in each host jurisdiction. The program will honor the national park or other national site in each host jurisdiction deemed most appropriate in terms of natural or historic significance.
New coins under the America the Beautiful Quarters® Program will be issued at a rate of five new designs each year in the order in which the selected sites were first established as a national site.
