One of the best known monuments to be featured as part of the new states quarters program is South Dakota's Mount Rushmore.
George Washington. Thomas Jefferson. Abraham Lincoln. Theodore Roosevelt. They are giants of American history preserved for posterity in the granite of the Black Hills. Completed in 1941, Gutzon Borglum’s sculpture in the 5,725-foot-tall wall is dramatically lit at night. Concerts and special events are often performed in the shadow of the memorial.
Rising more than a mile above sea leavel, the credit behind the idea goes to South Dakota historian Doane Robinson. However the site and the presidents depicted were chosen by sculptor Gutzon Borglum, who designed the monument with his son Lincoln. Not without controversy, the site nonetheless attracts two million yearly visitors and is the state's largest tourist attraction.
