North Carolina's "national park coin" won't feature a national park at all; rather it will feature a design based on Blue Ridge Parkway, a national parkway and All-American Road that stretches between North Carolina and Virginia.
“America’s Favorite Drive” is best experienced slowly. Overlooks, trails, picnic and camping areas and lodges are within easy reach of this scenic byway that stretches almost 500 miles along the crest of the Blue Ridge mountains. Take in the mountain air and be on the lookout for the abundant wildlife along the way.
Foliage lovers are in for a treat; in the spring, wildflowers (including rhododendrons and dogwoods) bloom magnificently along the road. In September, autumn leavage begins on the mountaintops, reaching the valleys by October. The differences in altitudes mean that often in the middle of October, one can see multiple seasons occuring at once by looking down from the top of the colder, drier mountains to the more verdant valleys below.
