In 1862 President Abraham Lincoln signed the Homestead Act, ushering in an unprecedented era of westward expansion. In 1936, Congress passed Public Law 480 integrating a new site into the National Park System on the site of the first homestead. In 2015, the site was honored under the America the Beautiful Quarters program.
This monument is absolutely steeped in history. The 100 acres of Tallgrass Prarie have been restored so visitors experience the same terrain that settlers experienced a century and a half ago, a landscape and ecosystem that are exceedingly rare today. At the Education Center, visitors to the park can learn about the past via arts and crafts, science experiemnts and guided tours. For those that really want to see what every day life was like, the Palmer-Epard Cabin nearly flawlessly preserves the every day dwelling of a homsteader.
