Recipient Organization: United States Olympic Committee and the Los Angeles Olympic Organizing Committee

Per Public Law 97-220, the United States Olympic Committee was to receive 50 percent of the surcharges collected and use the funds to train athletes, to support local or community amateur athletic programs, and to erect training facilities. The Los Angeles Olympic Organizing Committee was to receive the remaining 50 percent to be used to stage and promote the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games.

Surcharges from the sales of these coins help fund a variety of organizations and projects that benefit the public. Commemorative coins are only available from the United States Mint for a limited time, as specified by public law.

Characteristics

The obverse design of the coin featured a design of the sculpture proposed that was to be placed in front of the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum with the Olympic Stadium in the background.

The reverse of the coin features eagle.
