Recipient Organization: Mount Rushmore National Memorial Society of Black Hills

Fifty percent of the surcharges collected from coin sales were to be distributed to the Mount Rushmore National Memorial Society of Black Hills to assist in their efforts to improve, enlarge, and renovate the Mount Rushmore National memorial. The remaining fifty percent of the proceeds from the coin sale surcharges were to be returned to the Federal Treasury for the purposes of reducing the national debt.

Surcharges from the sales of these coins help fund a variety of organizations and projects that benefit the public. Commemorative coins are only available from the United States Mint for a limited time, as specified by public law.

Characteristics

The obverse design on the coin features the American Eagle in flight over Mount Rushmore and six stars on the right edge.

The reverse features the inscription, Mount Rushmore National Memorial.
