Recipient Organization: Jefferson Endowment Fund and the Corporation for Jefferson's Poplar Forest

Surcharges received in connection with the sale of the first 500,000 coins issued were to be distributed to the Jefferson Endowment Fund, to be used to:
  • Establish and maintain an endowment to be a permanent source of support for Monticello and its historic furnishings.
  • For the Fund's educational programs, including the International Center for Jefferson Studies.
Surcharges received in connection with all other sales were to be distributed to the Corporation for Jefferson's Poplar Forest, to be used for the restoration and maintenance of the Forest.

Commemorative coin programs are created by acts of Congress to honor a person, place, or event. Surcharges from the sales of these coins help fund a variety of organizations and projects that benefit the public. Commemorative coins are only available from the United States Mint for a limited time, as specified by public law.

Characteristics

The obverse design of the coin features an image of Thomas Jefferson that was based on the medallion portrait by Gilbert Stuart.

The reverse of the coin features a rendering of a Monticello elevation drawing produced by the Historical American Buildings Survey/Historic American Engineering Record of the National Park Service.
